IMPROVING THE LIVES OF STUDENTS

When I was young my father told me a parable about an old man and starfish. It went something like this:  A young man was walking down a beach one day after a terrible storm. The weather had just calmed and the water had receded but the sky was still black. Across the beach there was strewn hundreds of thousands of starfish. Up ahead he saw an old man bending down and flinging each starfish back into the water. It was clearly a struggle for the old man but he kept on. The young man walked up to him and said " What do you think you are doing? You could not possibly save them all. What does it matter? Why bother?" The old man then straightened himself, dusted off his sandy hands on his trousers, and looked up at the young man. As he met the young man's eyes a smile cracked across his face. "It mattered to that one," he said. And turned to throw another starfish into the sea.

This is the same principles behind the tutoring program. We believe that each student should be supported. That through having someone to help with your homework, access to technology, food, and a quiet place to work we can make a difference. We may not reach every student that we set out to help, but we sure will celebrate, empower, and ultimately matter to that one.
